EN: São Luís is currently known as the “Brazilian Jamaica”, following reggae music’s presence and consolidation in the capital of the state of Maranhão for more than forty years. This article traces the process of creation and appropriation of this name brand by the people of São Luís and other cities of this Brazilian state, as well as the symbolic interactions established during this time. The “Brazilian Jamaica” trope was created and broadcasted by local media. They developed this discourse throughout the city’s history by editing images and sounds built by them and other sources, a process described in the text as a symbolic journey. The text ends by acknowledging the heterogeneous and hybrid character of all cultures, “identity formations that cut across and intersect natural frontiers,” as Stuart Hall once wrote.  The text also concludes that the high symbolic density of reggae culture allowed this new cultural appropriation in Brazil.

PT: Atualmente São Luís é conhecida como a “Jamaica Brasileira” pela presença e consolidação do reggae na capital há quase 40 anos. Essa constatação fundamenta-se no processo de criação e apropriação de tal expressão pela população do Maranhão, bem como nas relações de interação simbólica estabelecidas durante todos esses anos. A mídia local criou e difundiu esse tropo da “Jamaica Brasileira”, sustentando esse discurso ao editar imagens e sons construídos ao longo da história da cidade, um processo descrito no texto como um percurso simbólico. O texto termina reconhecendo caráter heterogêneo e híbrido de todas as culturas, “formações de identidades que atravessam e intersectam as fronteiras naturais”, como escreveu Stuart Hall, além da alta densidade simbólica da cultura do reggae, que permitiu essa nova apropriação no Brasil.
